4‐Anilinoazobenzene undergoes fission by nitrous fumes, yielding the benzenediazoniumion quantitatively and a mixture of nitrodiphenylamines. Under similar conditions 4‐aminazobenzene gives a diazoamino compound, whereas azobenzene is unaffected.
