The effect of various grey and scoured fibres on the decomposition of sodium chlorite has been studied. Various auxiliaries designed to limit the amount of chlorine dioxide evolved and the corrosion of stainless steel and to enable sodium chlorite to be used with maximum efficiency were investigated. Several grades of stainless steel have been tested in sodium chlorite bleaching liquors to determine their suitability for use in bleaching machinery. A method entailing acid descaling and passivation has been examined.
