Modern theories of the light‐absorption process and their application to dye molecules are reviewed. The factors governing the intensity and the wavelength of the absorption and the emission of light by dyes are discussed, together with the various fates of electronic‐excitation energy. The spectroscopic consequences of ordered dye aggregation are examined.
