A new method of dyeing and printing textiles is described in which the dye is bound to the fibre by means of a compound of high molecular weight. The advantages and disadvantages of existing methods of dyeing and printing textiles are surveyed and possible methods of combining dyes chemically with binders are discussed, with particular reference to the preparation of film–forming copolymers containing interpolymerised dye. Dyes containing acrylic groups have been found to be the most suitable. The application of such copolymers to textiles is considered; the colorations obtained have higher fastness to rubbing and to solvents than pigment dyeings and prints, but the light fastness is generally somewhat lower.
