The intrinsic properties of rayon and acrylic fibres are outlined, with particular reference to their performance in carpets. The development of fibre blends is described and the dyeing properties of different types of fibre are dealt with in some detail. The application of direct dyes to Fibro, Evlan, and M66 is illustrated and it is shown that the rate of dyeing decreases in the order M66 > Evlan > Fibro. The application of basic dyes to Courtelle is illustrated similarly and an indication is given of the methods for dyeing blends of Evlan and Courtelle, with particular reference to the one–bath two–stage process, in which basic dyes are applied to the Courtelle and then direct dyes are applied to the Evlan. Methods of applying dyes to Courtelle–Evlan blends are referred to and special attention is given to aspects of hank–dyeing and continuous methods of coloration that are of general application. The Embec process of yarn coloration is described in some detail and reference is made to recent work on Evlan yarn and to alternative techniques of coloration. Finally, some of the special techniques used in carpet manufacture are referred to briefly, with particular emphasis on the dyeing and heat–setting of hard–twist yarns used for carpets with a non–crush pile.
