One of the most noticeable characteristics of textile articles today is that they are usually accompanied by a variety of labels, many of which have implications concerning colour fastness. These labels are sponsored not only by textile manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers, but also by makers of dyes, fibres, detergents and appliances, dyers and printers, national standards authorities, retail organisations, and magazines; and now a national labelling scheme which includes textiles has been announced by the Consumer Council. The whole field is reviewed in the light of the Molony Committee's report and suggestions are made as to how such labels could best be used to reduce the incidence of consumer complaints about inadequate colour fastness.
