Practical details are given of the method of using ceramic‐lined kiers in the chlorite or peroxide bleaching of fabric in rope form. Inexpensive modifications to existing equipment are outlined that would enable bleach works to possess facilities for undertaking all types of bleaching process. Open‐width bleaching of fabric is then discussed. Various aspects of the use of the common bleaching agents— sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, and sodium chlorite—are considered and a method of overcoming the coloured‐fibre (“red fleck”) problem is mentioned. Bleaching of yarn on packages is thon described. Finally, attention is drawn to the importance of testing methods in the control of the bleaching process, with emphasis on the measurement of fluidity.
