On the basis of experiments with samples of hair of widely differing cystine contents, it is postulated that two distinctly different mechanisms of setting exist, viz. co‐operative chain unfolding and molecular slip, each of which is operative under appropriate conditions. This postulate has been successfully tested by application to results obtained with various setting agents.
