The paper describes work carried out in order to obtain level dyeings of high wet fastness on hatting felt. Those have been obtained both in the laboratory and on a works scale by replacing the levelling acid dyes that are normally employed by milling acid and metal‐complex dyes. These classes of dye normally produce unlevel dyeings when applied at low pH values; it has been found, however, that, by using proprietary levelling agents which form complexes with the dyes, and also by careful temperature control, those dyes can he applied at pH values much lower than are normally used.
