The fastness to light, rubbing, and washing of self‐colours of indigo, chrome, and acid dyes, and of indigo dyeings “topped” with a chrome or an acid dye, are assessed and compared. Although indigo contributes advantageously to the light fastness of topped dyeings in all except heavy doptns (where the fastness of the topping dye is adequate in self‐colours), the fastness to rubbing of topped dyeings decreases as the proportion of indigo increases. In general, for heavy depths, little advantage, in respect of fastness, accrues from the use of indigo as a “bottoming” dye.
