A theoretical relationship has been defined which relates intensity of fluorescence of a brightening agent to its concentration in a scattering substrate and to the absorption spectrum of the substrate. Optical quenching of fluorescence is an important effect which has been shown to occur with textile substrates to an extent agreeing approximately with theoretical prediction. The matching of fluorescent whites is considered, with particular reference to the avoidance of metamorism.
