A method of laminating flexible urethane foams to fabrics, and fabric to fabric and other flexible materials, using a transfer method to apply adhesive, is described, with notes on the development of a laboratory‐scale laminating machine. Details are given of the preparation and application of a urethane adhesive cured with an isocyanate. The effect of water‐repellent finishes on the strength of the bond between foam and fabric is discussed and suggestions are made as to the stage at which such finishes should be applied. The air permeability of various fabrics and laminates is considered and results of tests of the resistance of the laminates to washing and dry‐cleaning are described. Types of urethane foam are discussed, and tensile strength and elongation values given for two types of foam before and after treatment in dry‐cleaning solvents. The bond strengths of adhesive‐bonded and flame‐bonded laminates are compared.
