The chemistry of the reaction between tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chlorlde ( thpc ) and keratin has been investigated by analytical techniques, by studies of changes in mechanical properties of the fibre, and by means of setting and dyeing experiments. It is concluded that predominant reduction of disulphide binds to thiols occurs and that this is followed, under more drastic conditions, by the formation of thiazolidine‐4‐carboxylic acid. Covalent linking of phosphorus‐containing moieties to keratin does not occur.
