The ways in which research has affected the consumer in respect of his usage of textiles are discussed by selecting some specific examples— the bleaching of cellulose fibres, the development of synthetic dyes, mercerisation, the production of rayons and of synthetic‐polymer fibres, and the development of easy‐care finishes and of a flame‐resistant finish. In conclusion there is a brief discussion of priorities in research and the attitude of the laymen to it.
