The basic principles of colour measurement are briefly outlined and the C.I.E. system of colour specification is described. The different types of colour‐measuring instruments (visual trichromatic colorimeters, spectrophotometers, and photoelectric colorimeters) are described and their relative merits discussed. Finally, the application of these instruments in absolute measurements, measurements of colour differences, and prediction of colour recipes is indicated.
