Factors that contribute to the production of level vat dyeings on cotton yarn packages are discussed with reference to the machines, winding, and quality of dyes and chemicals used. A method is given for determining the leueo‐solubility of vat dyes in package‐dyeing systems. Rates of dyeing and migration properties are listed and examples of their use in the formulation of recipes and processes given. Earlier systems of prepigmentation are critically discussed and a new approach, based on the preparation, from FDN Caledon Grains, of very stable pigment dispersions with low pigment exhaustion values, is described. High pigment stability and control of the rates of reduction of FDN qualities are considered responsible for the success of the method.
