New information on the relation between dye constitution and behaviour in dyeing skittery wools is provided. It is shown that the production of skittery dyeings depends upon (a) the hydro‐phiiic/hydrophobic properties of the wool surface and (b) the hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance of the dye. Information on the hydrophilic nature of the. wool surface was obtained by contact angle measurements and on the hydrophobic properties of the dye by measurements of partition between water and butyl alcohol saturated with water.
