Colorimeters of different manufacture will not, in general, give measurements agreeing with one another even though they are designed to conform to CIE specifications, and the reasons for this are summarised. The conditions that must be fulfilled by a colorimeter to bo used for the measurement of fluorescent colours are given, and light sources that have been proposed for the colorimetry and visual assessment of fluorescent materials are reviewed and compared. Some of the methods of assessment that have been proposed are applicable only to fluorescently brightened near‐whites.
