A practical description is given of a system of dyeing linen cloth with vat dyes by the pad‐jig method, employed in a dyehouse whose annual production exceeds two million yards (for dresses and shirts). Stress is laid on the attainment of the highest possible absorbency during bleaching and other preparatory treatments for dyeing. Details of the padding mangles are given, and the danger of aggregation of dye as a result of the use of unsuitable padding oils is discussed.
