A method is described for the qualitative analysis of some disperse dyes on paper using petroleum ether (b.p. 65–70°c.) saturated with 98% methyl alcohol (2% water by volume). The appropriate amount of dye solution is spotted on the paper. After exposure to an atmosphere saturated with eluant vapour, the chromatograms are run overnight at 19–21°c. Details of the method and some Rf values are given in the text.
