Conclusions drawn from experiments on the combination of keratin with mixtures of sulphuric and hydrochloric acids 1,5 are criticised. Inconsistencies in the data are corrected, and the results recalculated on this basis. It is shown that the statistical test employed cannot be used to decide between rival theories, and the exact meaning to be attached to t ‐values is illustrated by an example. A critical examination is made of the assumptions which have to be made to test the Donnan and Gilbert‐. Rideal theories, and the claim that these data favour the latter is rejected.
