The introduction of the various classes of dyes for cellulosic fibres is dealt with in Historical sequence from Mauve in to the latest phthalocyanine compound. Some of the prominent members of each class are briefly mentioned, giving the year of their introduction. The effect of their introduction on the dyeing industry as seen by the author is briefly outlined.
