Atoms or free radicals (OH, Cl, F, N 3 etc.) are formed by irradiation of aqueous solutions of ion pair complexes, e g. Fe 3+ OH–, Fe 3+ Cl–. The radicals produced by electron transfer excitation can be detected by their ability to initiate the polymerisation of vinyl compounds.
