The fact that all the aminocoumarins are yellow, whereas coumarin itself is colourless, may be readily explained on modern resonance theory, which provides also a qualitative explanation of differences in depth of colour based on facility of resonance. The rhythmic field effect suggested by Clayton 2 is now shown to be without theoretical support.
