The earlier literature of the subject now surveyed is due mainly to Jacobson and Pries with their numerous collaborators. A comparison is made between the diazo–oxides and diazo–sulphides; all the experimental evidence, including that of absorption spectra, is in favour of a resonance–structure which includes quinonoid forms for the diazo–oxides, and a stable ring structure for the diazo–sulphides. The many interesting phenomena which this class exhibits are explained on electronic theory where possible. Comparison between the behaviour of benz–1:2:3–thiadiazole and naphthalene and of their derivatives shows considerable similarity, although notable divergences are found for which explanations are submitted.
