Previous theories relating to the colour of certain diazonium salts, in particular those of Hantzsch 1 and Morgan 4, 5, 15 , are reviewed, and in general are found to be included, with their limitations explained, in the more comprehensive modern resonance theory of colour as developed by Lewis and Calvin 13 , Pauling 15 , Bury 27 , and others. On this theory, Morgan's colourless diazonium salts from. N –benzoyl– p –phenylenediamine and coloured di azonium salts from N –benzoyl –1:4 –naphthylenediamine receive adequate interpretation, as also do his coloured mono– and bis –diazonium salts from 2:7–diaminonaphthalene23.
