Summary Sulphonation of 1‐amino‐2‐hydroxynaphthalene‐3‐carboxylic acid and climination of the 1‐amino‐group from the product 1 yields 2‐hydroxy‐3‐carboxynaphthalene‐6‐sulphonic acid. The orientation of the sulphonic group was determined by conversion into the corresponding dihydroxynaphthoic acid, the dimethyl ether of which afforded 2: 6‐dimethoxynaphthalene on decarboxylation.
