Summary1 An experimental method is described for the catalytic reduction of anthraquinone and anthraquinonoid vat dyes by which the sodium salt of the reduced form is obtained free from the oxidised form and from other impurities. 2 Evidence is given that, when the leuco ‐compound so obtained is reoxidised by air or by sodium hypochlorite, one peroxide group is formed for each reduced quinone group oxidised. 3 The quantitative relation between reduced quinone groups reoxidised and peroxide groups formed appears to be independent of the tendering activity of the dye.
