This essay draws together the disparate literature on World War One soldier settlement throughout the British Empire. It shows that an agrarian myth in various forms underlay the various settlement schemes. ‘Failure’ was also a wide spread motif for the schemes and the level and nature of failure is discussed. Comparative approaches and case studies are frequently used by writers in this field and some of the issues involved are discussed. Finally some gaps in the literature relating to housing, and indigenous peoples are identified and a check list for possible future work is put forward.
