In the 30 years since scholarship in Islamic numismatics was last surveyed, the field has expanded well beyond the identification of coins to include discussions of monetary circulation and wider monetary history. Crucial to this process has been the growth of coin archives, primarily through the appearance of sylloges and digital publications. Numerous specialized studies have also appeared, drawing particular attention to issues of new theoretical approaches to monetary valuation and circulation and to the important matter of Islamic metrology and metrological systems.
