The scholarly attention to devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico has shifted, from the 1970s on, from struggles over whether or not she actually appeared in 1531 to discussions of the nature of that devotion in two ways in which it has taken on personal, religious, and national significance: that is, the ways in which individuals and Mexican society have reacted and interacted with this most important figure.
