This article explores the common notion that the secular reforms introduced by Turkey's founding President, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, met with constant opposition in the form of Islamic “reaction.” It explores the genealogy of this concept and its place in the historical literature concerning Turkey. The argument is that the idea of Islamic “reaction” results in the misrepresentation of Turkish history and is based on a fundamentally flawed view of religion and society.
