This article surveys Chinese expansion and colonization in the early modern period ( c. 1400–1900), when China extended its frontiers by both conquest and settlement, including the use of convict labor, and sponsored, coerced or accepted migration into sparsely populated peripheral areas already subject to Beijing's central control.
