Brazilian elites during the early nineteenth century pushed for the creation of a free‐market economy, but this made the bulk of the population feel unprotected by the state on which they had come to rely for a minimum of succor. The ensuing violent reaction put a halt to the implementation of such policies. There are lessons here for the present.
