The effect of sweep positional distortion on the quality of images of panoramic photographs is evaluated for vertical, forward looking oblique and tilted panoramic photography. It is shown that an image motion compensation mechanism will not eliminate sweep positional distortion completely, and a residual displacement will exist, which is greater for image co‐ordinates parallel to the central axis of the panoramic cylinder of the vertical and forward looking oblique photography.
