The theme of this paper is the importance of very basic communication skills which may be taken for granted. It shows how an appreciation of art can contribute to an understanding of photogrammetry and how techniques of painting and the aims of painters can aid an ability to communicate. Photogrammetrists need a mathematical background but the mathematics which is taught at school may not be enough. It is necessary to look to less conventional thinkers in order to understand, for example, how perspective and projective transformations can complement the geometric fundamentals of photography to extract information. Finally the paper explores the theme of “Ways of seeing” to see how photogrammetry and remote sensing can interact to enable practitioners to learn from each other to exploit the great wealth of information contained in an image.
