Most normal requirements of photocontrol for mapping are outlined in terms of accuracies, patterns and densities of points, and methods of identification. An established mapping organisation is well able to make the necessary allowances for particular local difficulties. Ground control remains an expensive, high risk and time consuming part of the map production process which should be kept to a minimum by using aerial triangulation and airborne control where appropriate. Once the GPS (global positioning system) satellites become fully operational, the approach to control will have to be reassessed.
