Digitising from a photogrammetric instrument can be controlled by a unit specially designed for this purpose, or by a digital control computer. In the latter case, the digitising system is more flexible since alterations and additions to the real‐time programs can easily be made to effect different digitising applications. The control computer can also be used in processing the digitised data. The use of such digital control in photogrammetry is as yet limited. The reasons are examined. The characteristics and real‐time requirements of a computer controlled digitising system are stated. Different digitising and recording modes, identification numbers and editing arrangements are then given to illustrate the flexibility and limitations of such a system.
