Summary A prototype instrument is described which is used to determine the plane rectangular coordinates of the same points of detail on two overlapping aerial photographs. It is designed for use with photography up to a maximum format of 9 inches by 9 inches, carrying a reseau graduated in 1‐cm intervals which has been superimposed from the camera register glass at the moment of exposure. Photography not bearing a reseau can also be accommodated by inserting engraved glass reseau plates in the instrument. The coordinates are determined relative to the nearest reseau intersection by micrometers in x and y. Coded scale digitisers are fitted to determine the micrometer readings to the nearest 0–001 mm and the reseau cross identification. Point identification data and coordinates are read out on punched cards or punched tape in suitable form for solution by high‐speed computing machines. A visual display of coordinates is provided.
