THE UNPRODUCTIVE PRODUCTION FUNCTION

Some major problems associated with production function analysis of farm survey data are reviewed. Problems arise in the treatment of capital, the aggregation of inputs and outputs, the aggregation of functional relationships, specification of the function, and statistical estimation. These problems have not yet been resolved and doubts must remanin regarding the validity of much firm‐level production function analysis. Résumé LA FONCTION IMPRODUCTIVE DE LA PRODUCTION Cet article passe en revue certains problèmes majeurs associés à l'analyse des données des exploitations agricoles basée sur la fonction de la production. Ces problèmes concernent le traitement du capital, l'agrégation intersectorielle des entrées et sorties, agrégat relationnel des fonctions, la spécification de la fonction et l'estimation statistique. Ces problèmes n'ont pas encore été résolus et les doutes doivent donc demeurer quant à la validité d'une grande partie des analyses fonctionnelles de la production au niveau des entreprises. Zusammenfassung DIE UNPRODUKTIVE PRODUKTIONSFUNKTION Es wird ein Uberblick gegében uber einige Hauptprobleme, die mit der Analyse von Produktionsfunktionen zusammenhangen, die aus Datenmaterial von Farmuntersuchungen stammen. Problème ergeben sich aus der Behandlung des Kapitals, der Aggregierung der Inputs und Outputs, der Aggregierung von Funktionsverhǎltnissen, der ausfiihrlichen Beschreibung der Funktion und statistischer Schǎt‐zungen. Dièse Problème wurden bis jetzt noch nicht gelǒst, und es mǔssen weiterhin Zweifel an der Giiltigkeit vieler mit Bestimmtheit aufgestellter Produktionsfunktionsanalysen bestehen.
