This paper describes the Agricultural Development and Advisory Service and its role within the organisation provided by the State to give support to farmers in Engalnd and Wales. Consideration is given to the factors leading up to the decisio to set up A.D.A.S. to replance the previous organisations and to the way in which the service is implementing its terms of reference. Résumé LE SERVICE DE CONSULTATION ET DE DÉVELOPPEMENT AGRICOLES Cet article dèrit le Service de consultation et de dèveloppement agricoles et son rǒle dans l'organisation mise en place par l'Etat pour aider les agriculteurs de l'Angleterre et du Pays de Galles.L'autew examine notamment les facteurs qui ont conduit á la dècision de crèer ce Service en remplacement des organismes prècèdents ainsi que la façon dont le nouvel organisme remplit les attributions qui lui ont ètè confièes.Zusammenfassung DER LANDWIRTSCHAFTLICHE ENTWICKLUNGS ‐ UND BERATUNGSDIENST Dieser Artikel beschreibt den landwirtschaftlichen Entwicklungs und Beratungsdienst und seine Rolle innerhalb der Organisation, die vom Staat geschaffen wurde, urn Farmern in England und Wales zu helfen. Die Gründe, die zu der Entscheidung fünrten, A.D.A.S. zu gründen und die früheren Organisationen zu ersetzen, werden aufgezeigt, und die Art, me der Dienst seine Leitsätze verwirklicht, wird beschrieben.
