PRICE UNCERTAINTY‐THE CASE FOR GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION *

Recently there has been considerable research into the effects of price uncertainty on the behaviour of firms. This paper explores some of the policy implications of this research. Specifcally, it considers the efect of a simple guaranteed producer‐price scheme the weljiare of producers, consumers, and taxpayers. lh analysis suggests that there is a strong prima facie case for such a scheme. Résumé INCERTITUDE DES PRIX‐LES ARGUMENTS EN FAVEUR D'UNE INTERVENTION GOUVERNEMENTALE On a pu lire rècemment me somme considèrable d'enquětes et analyses consacrèes aux effets de I'incertitude des prix stir le comportement des entreprises. Le prèsent article examine á fond certaines des implications politiques de cette recherche et, spècifiquement, ètudie l'effet qu’ aurait sur le niveau de vie des producteurs, consommaleurs et contribuables l'instauration d'un simple systéme de garantie des prix á la production. L'analyse conclut á la force des arguments qui á premiére vue plaident en faveur de l'adoption d'un tel systéme.Zusammenfassung PREISUNGEWISSHEIT ‐ EIN FALL FÜR DAS EINGREIFEN DER REGIERUNG Die Auswirkungen der Preisunsicherheit auf das Verhalten von Firmen waren in der letzten Zeit Gegenstand vieler Untersuchungen. Dieser Artikel beschäftigt sich mit einigen politischen Implikationen dieser Forschung. Insbesondere wird die Auswirkung eines einfachen Produzentenpreisschemas auf das Wohlergehen der Produzenten, Konsumenten und Steuerzahler untersucht. Die Analyse deutet an, dass es einen zwingenden prima facie Grund für solch ein Schema gibt.
