The article outlines a new approach to the fuelwood problem. The best way to ensure future fuelwood supplies and simultaneously to prevent environmental degradation is to improve the management of woody biomass within existing production systems. The knowledge and techniques being practised within farming communities should be valued and built upon. The starting point is to discover local people's priority concerns and encourage tree production to meet those needs. In this way the fuelwood problem can best be tackled indirectly to achieve the required ends.
