In order to understand the theology of reformists like Guillaume Briçonnet, bishop of Meaux and central figure in early 16th‐century French ecclesiastical circles, one must concentrate on Briçonnet's relationship to mysticism. Briçonnet's theology comes in the main from his study of Pseudo‐Dionysius, and thus concentrates on a mystical understanding of Christianity and the Christian's path toward God. By looking also at Briçonnet's interest in the reinvigoration of Scripture and Hebrew mysticism, one can understand Briçonnet's theology as both reformist and in keeping with medieval tradition.
