This paper examines the wall paintings of the burial chapel of Giuliano di Francesco Guizzelmi (1446‐1518) in Prato Cathedral (1506‐10). Drawing on the memoriale or memorandum book of the patron and a posthumous biography of him, it explores the significance of the images with reference to prominent features of his religious life; his devotion to a miraculous crucifix and his intended pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The study helps to clarify the centrality of the visual in the religion of the period and argues that images must be treated as integral parts of religious practice.
