1 The effect of somatostatin (SS, 10 −6 m and 5 × 10 −6 m ) was studied on 45 Ca fluxes in guinea‐pig isolated atria. 2 SS produced a dose‐dependent decrease in 45 Ca uptake, this effect being dependent on the stimulation rate and Ca concentration in the bathing media. 3 The decrease in 45 Ca uptake was more evident at faster (60 and 180 beats min −1 ) than at slower frequencies (15 beats min −1 ) and was less evident in high Ca (5.4 m m ). 4 SS had no effect on 45 Ca efflux. 5 These results suggest that SS inhibits the slow inward Ca current in guinea‐pig atrial fibres.
