Summary Peritoneal dialysis is an effective modality for the treatment of acute and chronic renal failute, specific intoxications, electrolyte abnormalities, and fluid overload. This review of peritoneal dialysis as it applies to the veterinary critical care setting includes: the indications and contraindications for dialysis; selection and placement of peritoneal catheters; description of the dialysis delivery technique; considerations for monitoring the dialysis patient and treatment of common complications of dialysis therapy. If appropriately applied, peritoneal dialysis is a viable treatment tool in veterinary critical care.
