. This paper describes the process of territorial redistribution of political power that has accompanied the restoration of democratic institutions in Spain. This schematic description is divided into three parts. First, an assessment of the historical context in which the process by which the Autonomous Communities appeared. Second, a classification of this process, recording three subsequent stages, in each of which the dynamics of the process have relatively different aspects. Finally, a consideration of ‘pending problems’, some of which are already present in the political arena, while others are less visible in spite of their influence on the final result of the process.
