The signs of political generations in France that can be traced in the Presidential election of 1974 – in particular the generations of May 1968 and of the Algerian war – enable us to outline a few hypotheses: the age at which a generation comes into being is a function of the major events that occur and of their repercussions; generations may come into being over a very precise, very short period linked to a crisis in the political system. They will usually by and large concern a particular political and social group rather than the entire population.
