Evidence is presented both for and against several explanatory models of SNP electoral support. There are remarkable similarities of timing and psychology between SNP support and support for Liberals or abstention in England. Yet SNP support matches attitudes towards more self‐government. It would appear that SNP support has been caused by Britain‐wide influences breaking the constraints that formerly kept the self‐government cleavage out of party politics.
